Nigerian Stock Market Performance Review:

A month-by-month breakdown of the Nigerian Stock Exchange's best and worst performers — and the simple portfolio strategy that turned every month into a profit.

Since February 2026, Personal Finance Circle has been publishing a monthly list of 10 Nigerian stocks to watch. Four months in, it's time to look back at the numbers: which stocks delivered the biggest returns, which ones dragged, and what the data says about investing in the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) right now.

Using a custom stock investment tracker, we modeled a simple scenario: investing ₦100,000 in each of the 10 recommended stocks every month (₦1,000,000 total) and tracking the results from opening price to closing price.

Best stocks to buy in 2026

February 2026: The Strongest Month of the Series

February set the tone for the entire series. Every single one of the 10 recommended stocks — Nestle Nigeria, Seplat Energy, UBA, Dangote Cement, MTN Nigeria, Guinness Nigeria, Zenith Bank, Airtel Africa, Nigerian Breweries, and Dangote Sugar — closed the month without a loss.

Top performers:

  • Nestle Nigeria — 44% gain (₦43,000 profit)
  • Seplat Energy — 36% gain (₦35,000 profit)
  • MTN Nigeria — 33% gain (₦32,000 profit)
  • Dangote Sugar — 28% gain (₦27,000 profit)
  • Dangote Cement — 23% gain (₦22,000 profit)

A ₦1,000,000 investment spread across all 10 stocks grew to ₦1.2 million by the end of February — a total gain of ₦201,000 in a single month. Holding those same stocks through the end of May would have pushed the value even higher, to roughly ₦1.4 million, led by Dangote Cement (₦185,000) and Zenith Bank (₦183,000).

March 2026: A Mixed Month, But Still a Long-Term Win

March introduced a fresh set of 10 stocks — First Bank, Presco PLC, Stanbic IBTC, Flour Mills Nigeria, GTCO, WAPCO, Transcorp, Lafarge Africa, Nigerian Breweries, and Access Holdings — and the results were more uneven.

Top performer: WAPCO, up 20% (₦19,000+ profit)

Several stocks, including First Bank, Presco PLC, GTCO, Transcorp, Nigerian Breweries, and Access Holdings, closed the month in the red. The net result: a ₦1,000,000 investment ended the month at ₦997,643 — a minor loss of ₦2,357.

However, investors who held these same stocks through the end of May would have seen the portfolio recover to roughly ₦1.16 million, showing how short-term dips can smooth out with a longer holding period.

April 2026: Back to Growth

April's picks — Wema Bank, Union Bank of Nigeria, Total Energies Marketing, Fidelity Bank, Guinness Nigeria, Okomu Oil Palm, Jaiz Bank, Sun Assurance, MTN Nigeria, and Zenith Bank — pushed the portfolio back into solid profit.

Top performer: Union Bank of Nigeria, with a ₦46,000 gain

By the end of April, a ₦1,000,000 investment had grown to ₦1.13 million, a profit of ₦130,000. Held through the end of May, the portfolio remained roughly stable at ₦1.123 million.

May 2026: International Breweries Leads, But Losses Creep In

May's stock picks — International Breweries, NAHCO, Custodian Investment, UBA, Sterling Bank, Seplat Energy, Conoil, United Capital, Dangote Sugar, and Access Bank — marked the first clearly negative month of the series.

Top performer: International Breweries, up 5% (₦4,500 profit)

NAHCO was the biggest drag on the portfolio, losing roughly ₦26,000, followed by losses in Custodian Investment and Access Bank. The overall portfolio closed the month at ₦973,000, a loss of ₦26,000 on the initial ₦1,000,000 investment.

Four-Month Summary: February–May 2026

Month Best Performer Gain Portfolio Result
February 2026 Nestle Nigeria +44% +₦201,000
March 2026 WAPCO +20% -₦2,357
April 2026 Union Bank of Nigeria +46% +₦130,000
May 2026 International Breweries +5% -₦26,000

Even accounting for March and May's losses, an investor who followed the monthly picks and diversified across all 10 stocks each time would have stayed net positive overall across the four-month stretch.

Should You Hold Stocks for the Month or the Long Term?

One of the most common questions from readers is simple: do you sell at the end of the month, or hold longer? Based on this tracking exercise, a few practical principles stand out:

1. Take Profit When a Stock Overperforms

When a single stock delivers an outsized gain — like Nestle Nigeria's 44% in February — it makes sense to lock in a portion of that profit rather than leaving all of it exposed to next month's volatility. Withdrawing even half the gain protects you if the stock pulls back.

2. Reinvest in Underperformers Selectively

Not every red month means a bad stock. Some of March's losing stocks were simply due for a correction, and adding to a position at a lower price can pay off if the fundamentals are sound.

3. Build a Long-Term, Dividend-Paying Core

Beyond monthly trading picks, it's worth holding a separate set of stocks for 5–10 years or longer, ideally dividend-paying companies that generate steady returns regardless of month-to-month price swings.

4. Concentrate, Don't Spread Too Thin

Rather than splitting a small amount across all 10 recommended stocks, it's generally more effective to choose 3–5 stocks and invest a meaningful amount in each. Spreading ₦5,000 across ten different stocks limits your ability to benefit meaningfully from any single winner.

What's Next: June and July 2026 Stock Picks

The monthly stock recommendation series continues, with the June 2026 picks already published and July's list coming soon. Following the same tracking approach makes it possible to see, month over month, exactly how these recommendations play out — both the wins and the losses.
